Here are some expert tips to tell if a posted job is really a job, or is a business opportunity (or worse yet, a scam):

• The posting will have requirements. Certain skills, equipment, and/or years of experience will be required for the job. If the ad says that it does not require any equipment or skill, it is not likely to be an actual job posting. Some examples of requirements for a home customer service representative ( a common work at home job) might be one year of customer service experience, a good phone manner, and basic computer skills (like entering data or sending emails).
• The job will require an application or resume, and may ask for some references. A company that is willing to hire people to work at home will not want to take everybody, but will look for disciplined, self starters.
• Any sort of application fee should make you wary. You do not usually have to pay to apply for a job.
• A home office job may have an hourly pay scale, salary, and even benefits. But if the promise of earnings looks too good to be true, that should cause you some concern. Have you seen ads that promise $7,000 a month for posting links on Google? Those are not endorsed by the search engine, and are certainly not postings for jobs with wages.

I just read an excellent ebook about ways to make money online. This book is truly for the beginner or the person who has been trying to make money online but has not been as successful as they had hoped. I checked out the website because the name intrigued me -  Affiliate Underdog. I read the ebook and liked it so much, I decided to review it on my site.

The book begins with the premise that you don’t have to be a big company to make an income off the internet. The author is a stay at home mom who is supporting her three children with her online income. The author explains that because web site design has become so user friendly, anyone can build their own website – “if you can muddle your way through a word processing document or send an email, you can build a website.” Not only that but the great thing is you don’t have to spend any money to set up your website. But ofcourse building the web site is only the first step.

Affiliate-underdog gives you easy to understand explanations of how search engines work and how you attract the search engine traffic to your site, again without spending any money. The book details a very simple method that the author used to build her online business.  All the technical terms are explained in plain english. She also gives you time estimates for each step. The book is filled with links to sites that will help you bring free website traffic to your site. The whole concept of affiliate marketing programs is explained in great detail and the book gives you the names of the affiliate programs the author actually uses and makes money from.

The book walks you through the whole process - developing an idea for a web site, building your own website, writing posts for your web site, how to find key words, how to develop links and how to  track your web site traffic. I thought the book was reasonably priced at $23.50. I think I probably spent that much on coffee at Starbucks last month. So make yourself a cup of coffee at home and spend some time with Affiliate Underdog. If you are looking to earn money online or eventually work at home full time, this is the book for you. It offers an easy way to get started without having to invest any money. 1. Raise your arms over your head and clasp your hands together. Pull in your abdominal muscles so you won’t strain your back. Lean to the right side for 5 to 10 seconds and then to the left side for 5 to 10 seconds. Do this 2 or three times. If this is too difficult do one arm at a time. Lift your left arm overhead and lean right then lift your right arm over head and lean to the left.

2. Take you left arm extend it directly in front of you.  Again, make sure you pull in the abdominals or your could hurt back. Take your right hand and grasp your left elbow from underneath and gently pull your left arm across your body. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Then extend your right arm  and take your left hand and grasp your right elbow from underneath. Gently pull your right arm across your body. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds.

3. Shrug your shoulders up and roll them forward 5 to 10 times. Shrug your shoulders up and roll them backward 5 to 10 times. As always pull in your abdominals. Tightening your  stomach muscles will keep the strain off your back and help build your abdominal muscles.

4. You may have to sit sideways in your chair to do this exercise. Extend your right leg until it is sticking straight out. Flex your foot (pull your toes back). Relax your foot and lower your leg. Repeat 5 to 10 times. Extend your left leg until  it is sticking straight out. Flex your foot. Relax your foot and lower your leg. Repeat 5 to 1o times.

5. Take your shoes off for this one. Place the ball of your right foot on the floor (your heel is lifted off the floor). Gently rotate your ankle clockwise then counterclockwise. It will feel ackward the first couple of times you do this. If you can’t get it – stand up (hold onto something for balance) and try the exercise. Again, do this 5 to 10 times for each ankle.

If you feel pain, don’t continue doing the exercise.  If you are able do these exercises several times a day. Your muscles should feel less tense and your joints may be a bit more flexible. Flexibility in our joints helps prevent injury.

I seldom use this forum to promote home business or marketing guides, though I have purchased more in the last few months than I care to admit. Even though I’ve been working online since the Big 2000, I know that others are more successful than I am, and I guess I’m always thinking the next book will be my ticket to that ol’ beach chair! I guess I almost feel embarrassed to tell other webmasters that I do buy ebooks, but there you go ……

That permanant beach chair hasn’t quite worked out, though out of the half dozen big name ebooks I’ve purchased AND read, I do think that one of them was the real thing I was looking for. This isn’t to say that the rest were awful, they just really were not aimed at my style. I also didn’t think they would really help a newbie out that much. … or let me put it this way, I think they would end up cost a newbie a lot of money before the newbie ‘got it’ enough to begin making a profit.

So here comes the plug …. Why is your neighbor home all day?

I’m pretty sure that’s what my neighbors are asking. How does that woman support herself and her family without leaving the house? Maybe they think I have a sweet alimoney deal (Hey, I live in Texas – no alimony here!), or maybe they think I inherited a bundle. (Nope).

I leave every morning to drop my kids off at school, and then I come back to my house. Oh, I leave every once in awhile. I have errands to run, and friends to meet for lunch, but mostly I stay in my home office and work! I don’t have visitors during the day because I AM WORKING! But I do have a chance to chat on the phone and call my family without worrying about my phone being tapped (yes, I had this happen at work!) or an annoying boss standing over my shoulder. And yeah, that’s been the case more times than I care to remember!

Many big companies like Apple Computer and Hewlett Packard started in somebody’s garage!

It took me awhile to maintain a full time income online, and I still do put in many hours a week working on it. Honestly, I probably work more now than I did when I had a day job. But it really doesn’t seem like work to me because I’m in control. I get to be creative, learn, and grow, and do what I like! Plus, I’m available to take a phone call from the school, pick up a sick kid, or attend parent functions. I can shop at 9am when the stores are not crowded. It’s wonderful!

Everybody wants to know how to do it!

So how are these millions of people making a living online? Well I have found a few real ways that most people are actually making a living online. Most of these ways can be started part time with very little (or almost no) money! These opportunities can grow into full time work or businesses. Note that most work at home setups involve finding employers with flexible work plans, freelance work, or beginning your own home businsess. I have outlined them in a free report so I don’t have to keep to keep explaining it. Suze Orman weighs in on self-employement

I haven’t always been a big fan of Suze Orman, though many of my friends believe her books are the bible. If you also read my insurance blog, you’ll know that I disagreed with some of her insrurance buying tips, and that I generated a bit of a buzz that way. Cynically, I did also not that whenever I mention her name, my traffic goes up. What to do?

Anyway, I did see that Suze Orman’s article on self employement made the front page of Yahoo! today, so she does generate a lot more buzz than I do! Anyway, I’m sure that my Mom would agree with everything that Suze says. Don’t live off of credit, have a plan, don’t take a crazy, insane risk, and don’t eat up your retirement savings. That is good advice

However, and even Suze does note, that many of us started our businesses with our backs against the way. I had just been downsized about of my corporate computer job of 20 years, was going through a divorce, and really had the option of trying to support a pack of kids on some $10/hour job or starting my own business. Maybe the sane thing to do would have been to have taken a job in some office or retail store, but I did have a lot of skills and equipment and experience to do what I wanted to do. I went for it. That’s me, and even though I still think I’m fairly nuts, I have survived.

So to analyze Suze’s article, I’d say that she gives good advice. But sometimes you’ll regret taking good advice!

When I used to spend hours a day commuting, I dreamed of working from home. I’d drop the kids off at daycare, spend an hour in the car, and arrive at work feeling as if I’d already done half a day’s work! Then I’d rush out of work, hit the freeway, and swoop into the kid’s daycare, sometimes seconds before they closed at 6pm.  Any little problem – car trouble, a work meeting, etc. that would delay my afternoon commute practically caused me heart palpitations. Of course, it didn’t help that I was in a marriage where my spouse felt like it was a favor to me if he ever picked up the kids, but it was really my duty. O! A post for another day!

Work at Home IS WORK!

Anyway, I have gone past that marriage and my normal day job. It took me a long time, but now I feel comfortable telling people I have established a home business. But I want to make it clear that in order to be successful, I have exchanged a day job for a 24 hour a day obession. Yes, you can start a home business, and if you have time and persistance, you can make it work. But remember, the keyword here is work. Also not the title of this blog: Woman Work!

I will post later about the kinds of projects I have that allow me to make a living at home, and I want to tell you that I’ve helped all kinds of people set up home businesses. I have also known many people who telecommute a large majority of their time for other employers. I’m here to tell you that it takes a certain personality, and it requires discipline.

Home business IS BUSINESS

I hate those ads that promise a turnkey income, and show some guy sitting on the beach whil collecting fat checks. If that ever happens, it’s probably because some guy sells a book telling other people to advertise his book that contains nothing, except how to advertise a book. I have investigated some of these ads, and really, that’s what many of them contain. They advise you to set up ads for a work at home business, and explain how to collect money. Then the whole businesses is passing this garbage onto the next naive person.

Online Auctions and Sales Sites Are Good Places to Start

I have done those things, and I think it’s a good way to get started. Right now, I am more involved in affiliate marketing. I build websites around various interests I have, and I use companies that sponsor those websites. It works like this. When a client reads an article or uses a resource on my website, I will have a company link that offers to either sell, provide more information, or just show them their website. If one of my visitors performs the action, then I earn varying amounts of money.

What is Affiliate Marketing

If I am promoting another site that sells good then I may get a small percentage of the sale, just like any commission sales job. If I am promoting a site that wants a client to sign up for more information, then I am usually paid a fixed amount for each of my visitors that does this action. If I have pay per click ads, then I will get a small, fixed amount for every one of my surfers that clicks through to the other site.

This is usually how it works, though there may be other schemes as well. Some advertisers whill pay a website for impressions of their ads. However, your site usually has to generate a lot of impressions to make more than pennies from an ad like this.

I prefer to concentrate on topics I can provide useful information about, and find a quality visitor who will benefit from my site, and actually return for more. I’d rather have 100 people visit my site, and actually spend a few minutes reading what I have, then 10,000 visitors who got here by mistake and just want to leave! That’s my approach, but it takes time to build this, and with a GaZillion websites out there, the work never stops!
