Part Time Self Employment Ideas

Do you need extra cash? There are actually many different ways to get extra income but you will be most successful with the one suited to your personality. If you like being out in public and interacting with people, these part-time jobs offer flexible schedules and can pay from $8.00 to $12.00 an hour. Pay depends upon where you live and your prior work experience. Product demonstrator, delivery person, hotel desk clerk, bank teller are all legitimate ways to earn extra money.

If you need extra cash though and are unable to leave your home or you just don’t like interacting with the general public here is another option. Consider starting a modest internet business. It is not as hard as you might think.

It is very inexpensive to purchase a domain name (a name and internet address for your site) and there are many places where you can download a bare bones web site set-up for free. If you can send email, you can set up a web site using one of these simple set-up programs.

There are two ways you can make money with your website. One is to sign up for the Google Adsense program and make money when people click on the Google ads on your site and the other is to sell a product or acquire leads for a company that is looking to find people interested in signing up for what they are offering.

You are more likely to be successful if your site is about something you enjoy doing or is an extension of your current occupation. If you like gardening, cooking or wood carving consider that as focus for you site. If you are in a sales position such as insurance considering setting up a site to generate your own free leads.

The trick to making money with a web site is you have to get traffic or people visiting your site. There is a tremendous amount of information on the internet that will teach you how to attract people to your site. The problem is though the information is scattered and sometimes too technical to for the non-technical business person to comprehend. There is a great eBook you can read called LeadCallsYou that explains, in terms novice website owners can understand, how you get your site to attract visitors. The book is short and to the point and gives you many free resources that are specifically designed for novice users. To check out this book click on this link LeadCallsYou When you click on the link, the advertising page for the book might give you the impression it is just for people who need to generate leads, but I have read the book and can tell you that the information can be applied to any website.

What is Web 2.0

Web 2.0 describes an evolution of the internet where the users participate in the content more. For a serious explanation of Web 2.0 you might look here. Web 2.0 has really caught on, and most of the the hot, cash generating online buzz these days integrate between the provider and the user. If you plan on spending a lot of time online, this is once concept you will want to grasp!

From The Oreilly Website, linked above we have:

Web 1.0 Web 2.0
DoubleClick –> Google AdSense
Ofoto –> Flickr
Akamai –> BitTorrent
mp3.com –> Napster
Britannica Online –> Wikipedia
personal websites –> blogging
evite –> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation –> search engine optimization
page views –> cost per click
screen scraping –> web services
publishing –> participation
content management systems –> wikis
directories (taxonomy) –> tagging (“folksonomy”)
stickiness –> syndication

I copied this because, for me, seeing the examples is the easiest way to understand the difference.

Why is Web 2.0 Funny?

However, these days the concept seems to have gone too far. Fan participation, or the use of interactive products DOES NOT replace creativity or originality on the part of the website creator.

To understand this concept of Web 2.0 run amok, and to get a good laugh, see the Web 2.0 B.S. Generator.

Well, Boar or Dog?

Chinese New Year approaches, and I am perplexed by the same question that always hits me this time of year. If I were Chinese, would I be a boar or a dog. See I already celebrated my birthday this year. But according the placemat in every Chinese Buffet, my birth year would make me a Boar. However, a very nice Chinese lady that I worked with, told me that since my birthday came before the Chinese New Year, that I was really a Dog.

This makes sense to me. The Chinese New Year doesn’t fall on the same date as ours. So, since my birthday pops up before the celebration, or sometimes almost at the same time, I might be a dog. But maybe the Chinese New Year floats around a bit on our calendar, and in my own birth year, I could have been born after it. Who knows? Maybe I was even a Chinese New Year Baby?

My kids do not care.

I explained the situation to my teen-aged son. He is very good at math and has always had a gift for hair splitting. He looked at me with his best vacant scare. I honestly don’t think he cares! Oh well, I can see big trouble is brewing IN THE WORLD (of warcraft), and he must attend to it. My conversations about foreign horoscopes pale…..

Well, next I hopped over to Yahoo Horoscope. The good Yahoos were aware that I was born under the sign of Aquarius, but that’s not what my problem was. I clicked the link for Chinese Astrology. You can click here to find out what your Chinese Astrology Sign is. ….or can you?

Yahoo! thinks I’m a pig. I wonder what Wiki thinks..or never mind. They let Steven Colbert get away with that elephant thing! I still think it is illogical since I already had my birthday.

Oh, YAHOO – anybody got a resource to tell me what day the Chinese New Year Fell on a day that was lo, those many decades ago?

EUREKA – I FOUND IT!

O.K. apparently the Chinese New Year always begins on the full moon and since our calendar doesn’t work that way, the Chinese New Year Date floats on our holiday. Apparently Chinese New Year can be from late January to early February on Our Calendar. Anyway, if you HOP OVER TO WIKIPEDIA CHINESE NEW YEAR, ALL SECRETS WILL BE REVEALED (that is, if they are correct!).

Anyway the point of this is….in my birth year, I was born slightly after the Chinese New Year, even though my birthday fell a little before it this year. I am, indeed, a pig.

I don’t give enough to charity

Well, I don’t think I give enough, so first I decided to make a page telling visitors which merchants they could buy products from who donated a portion of their earnings to charity. The trouble is, I didn’t find that many online merchants who had an offer, though there are plenty of charities or non-profit organizations that run online stores. Anyway, you can click here to visit my Online Charity Merchant Page.

I run several websites and blogs, and I do it pretty much to benefit…me. But I’m comfortable. The online world has been good to me. Since I can assign tracking codes so I know which websites purchases come from, I decided to contribute 25% of my pay to charity when a sale or transaction originates on WomanWork.Net. I may change the amount – and I will post and tell you – depending upon how it goes.

See, workingwoman.net is sort of a self-indulgent blog for me. It is not related to my main area of expertise. As such, it is the one operation I don’t really run like a business, and so it isn’t even paying for it’s own hosting …. yet. When it gets to the point where it pays for itself, then I will probably decide to have it direct a larger percentage to charity.

See that article that Time Magazine published about YOU (and ME) being the person of the year really struck a nerve! But that was the subject of another post! Go look for it.

If you have suggestions for worthwhile online merchants who donate to charity, please comment, and I’ll check them out. If I think they are ‘real’, I’ll add them to the page.

Oh wow, is it everybody’s fate to get older and start remembering how things were when they were you like it was some sort of mystic dream? Have you ever wished you could slip back into your twelve year old barefoot self, and just spend one more summer afternoon in the house you grew up in, with all the people there who would also have regressed to their younger selves. I think about that sometimes, especially now that my Dad has passed on.

Of course, I look at my kids and sometimes wish I could just slip back to have one more day with them as babies or toddlers, and I really tend to get like that when I look at old pictures of them when they were soooo cute, and their most pressing problem was balancing on two feet.

But what I’m really thinking about is that time that Stephen King refers to as Camelot. I am a little younger than the prolific writer, but not so young that I don’t “get” his reference. However, I have to wonder if every generation doesn’t see the land of their childhood that way. I grew up middle class, in a small town, while the Vietnam war raged. But I was only a child, and not one of the famous teens or twenty year olds of that era. But still, being a kid, I was probably even more impressionable than the older kids were. All of a sudden, when I emerged as a young adult, we were blasting into the ‘me’ years of the 1980′s. My head was still stuck in the late 60′s somehow. …and of course, that explains A LOT!

But when I listen to my mom talk about her childhood during the depression, and her teen years during world war II, I get the sense that her Camelot existed then. I wish my grandparents were still around, so I could ask them where their Camelot is.

Anyway, the point of my rambling is really my thoughts on Time’s Person Of The Year for 2006. Hey, it’s you! Now I’m a long time blogger, and this is really my latest adventure – and my self-indulgent one. Most of my other blogs are fairly commercial, because, hey – a woman’s got to earn a living - right?

My friends do not understand what I do, but I understand that most of them could benefit from a blog in one way or another. They remain unconvinced. I keep saying, “Hey, YOU are the person of the year!” Somehow my friends and I, who mostly share the same ‘camelot’, don’t really communicate on this. My friends are these wonderful, accomplished people, and I really feel like blogging is a gift I could give them for so many reasons, but this doesn’t seem to be what they want from me.

Only my daughter, motivated by her social circle, has begun her blog. It’s a great one too. I got her started, but she took off. My sons, also, are not interested. Well, if one of you readers are curious about blogging, stay tuned. You can start for free, like most of us did, on a great service like blogger.com!

If you are a fan of The Once and Future King like I am, then you know that Camelot is always hapenning. Maybe you should be there to document it!
