Halloween Safety Tips For Children and Parents

Here are some safety tips from The American Red Cross:

Halloween Safety Tips For Children

  1. Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible have an adult go with you.
  2. Walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
  3. Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks and low-flying brooms.
  4. Cross the street only at corners, not in the middle of the block and stay together in a group before crossing.
  5. Never hide or cross the street between parked cars.

Summer Jobs for Teenagers

Student Summer Jobs – Calling All Teens

Parents of teens – listen up. College kids will be coming home next week so if your teen wants a job have them start looking now. Here are some tips that were published in the business section of our local paper:

Ask friends, teachers, family, neighbors, people at your church, any one you know. Also go out and look for help wanted signs. Many stores post them in their windows.

Talk to the high school guidance counselor. Employers and alumni often contact them when they have teen-appropriate job openings.

Part Time Jobs For Teens – Volunteer

Summer is coming and all of us working moms are wondering what to do with teens who are not old enough to work but are too old for summer camp. The last thing we want to see is them sitting home all summer plopped in front of the  computer. The last thing we want to hear is “Mom, I boooored.” So what can we do? A newspaper article in our local paper suggested part time volunteer work. This is really a great idea and I can speak from personal experience. My son has volunteered at the public library for the past two years and has loved it. My daughter was 12 when she started volunteering. She volunteered to read to the kids once a week at one of our local Head Start centers. She also really enjoyed her volunteer work and said it helped her not be so bored. There are volunteer opportunities for teens at hospitals, local humane societies and pet rescue organizations. The article in my paper suggested parents approach their local vet and ask about an internship. Find out what your child is interested in and see if there is a related volunteer opportunity.
