We all have some favroite childhood books that we remember. Maybe they entertained or inspired us. It is great to look back upon these old favorites fondly, but it is also a good idea to learn about newer books for children that you may not be aware of!

Librarian / Grandma!

If you are trying to find some suggestions for your own kids, or if you need to send your grandchild a holiday present, try consulting the Librarian/Grandma at BookandAGarden.com! You won’t have to spend a lot of time on the website to get the idea that she really loves kids, and she really loves books!

You may even learn a few new things about books. For example, did you know that there was Shrek the book before there was ever a serious of movies called Shrek!? I had no idea even though I had oved all of the movies.

Find books to satisfy every kid’s taste. They can enjoy the books as entertainment, and they may even learn a few things while they think they are just reading a new story!

Good Jobs for Teenagers

Are there cool jobs for teenagers? Teenagers face some unique problems in finding employment: they may not have transportation, they may not be old enough or they may not have a schedule that fits the job. So many teens get frustrated in their search. Many of them get easily bored working a fast food restaurant or drug store which is where so many of them wind up. With a little creative thinking though and some focus on what they like to do, cool jobs for teenagers becomes a reality.

1. Check out your academic skills or musical ability. If you are good in math, foreign language, science etc. you can hire yourself out as tutor. Many teachers tutor to earn extra money but if you price yourself a little below them parents who are looking to save a bit of money will seek you out. Also, there are tutoring centers around town such as Kumon Math and Reading that hire bright teenagers to work in the centers. If you play an instrument and are an advanced player you can teach beginner students. My son’s friend does this and earns good money. Also, if you enjoy music consider working in a music store. You will broaden your skills and get paid. Also, if you are a good musician considering playing at weddings, birthday parties etc.

2. Baby-sitting – Babysitting is a tried and true way for any responsible teenager to make money (IF you like kids!). There are several things you can do to make your services more valuable. First, you should go take a Red Cross first aid course so that you know how to handle emergencies. You might also want to volunteer at your church if there is a day-care center there. You can pick up a lot of valuable experience that way. Second, you might want to consider teaming up with some like-minded friends. That way your group will be able to say “yes” more often and that will increase the number of calls you get.

3. Lawn or yard care - During the summer you mow lawns, trim hedges and so on. In the fall you rake leaves. In the winter you shovel snow.

4. Baked goods (cookies, cakes etc.) – Many families are too busy to bake their own cookies and cakes these days. However, having fresh-baked goods around the house is nice. Also, a family might need a home-baked cake for a school bake sale or a party. You could provide baked goods for special occasions like these or sell baked goods at local craft or farmers’ markets. Check local health laws as you are starting this sort of activity.

5. Dog walking or vacation pet care – If you like animals you can earn money walking dogs or pet sitting. Our subdivision newsletter has free listings for dog walkers and pet sitters. You could also “plant sit.” , if you enjoy gardening. People who are avid gardeners might need someone to care for their plants while they are out of town. .

6. Errand-running for busy people - Busy people often do not have time today to stand in line to get their license plates renewed, to buy groceries or to run other errands. Your business would handle these tasks for them.

7. Washing cars for neighbors – You can simply wash cars. The price of car washes has really gone up lately and the do -it-yourself ones take a lot of time. Probably many moms with small children would like to have their cars washed and vacuumed especially.

8. Teaching older people how to use computers or the internet – Many older people are totally affraid of computers. If you understand computers you can help them. You could come to the customer’s home (or they to your home) and you could charge on a half-hourly or hourly basis.

9. Creating Web Sites – If you are artistic and technically minded, there is a great opportunity available right now creating web sites for small businesses. Or try creating your own web site that generates a lot of traffic and make money selling ads on it with adsense.

10. Making and selling something unique - If you are artistic create greeting cards or draw portraits or possibly paint furniture or do murals in bedrooms or homes. If you are crafty you can make things that people can use for teacher or co-worker gifts.

Need Money for College Tuition

In the ideal world you would have a college fund for each of your children. But how many of us actually live in an ideal world? If your a parent then your life is full of bills for braces, day care, music lesson, tutors, summer camp etc. and it can be hard to find any money to put toward that far away place called college. So you rack your brains thinking where to find money for college? Okay, here is where to find money for college:

There really are a variety of financial aid programs that your student may qualify for. Before you even start looking for financial aid, decide what schools your child wants to apply to. I say this because many schools have generous financial aid programs and you may not have to look for additional money after you see what the school can offer.

Have your child apply to all the schools he or she is really interested in even if you think you can not afford the tuition. Here is where so many people go wrong – they think they can not afford to send their child to expensive private school because they can’t pay the tuition. But actually some of the private schools are very well funded and can offer generous financial aid to your child and in the end you may put out less money for your child to attend the expensive private school than the cheaper state school.

The first step in where to find money for college is to fill out your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The deadline is June 30 but you want to get yours in as soon as you can because some aid is given out on a first come first serve basis. This means you will have to do your tax return early because FAFSA is mostly based on income level, but it is worth it because it may get your student extra money for college. If you just can’t do the tax return give your best estimate based on last years return.

When you apply for the FAFSA, make sure you have the following documents on hand:
1. Your social security card
2. Your parents’ social security cards, if you are a dependent
3. Your driver’s license
4. Your previous year’s tax documents
5. Information concerning any untaxed income

Another where to find money for college is the college itself. Many schools have scholarship funds, merit and need based, and they usually have endowments which allows them to give quite a bit of money to qualified students. Endowments are large amounts of money that people have given to the institution either as an alumni or for tax write offs or just because they want to help kids get a college education.

Family Eating Dinner Together

We know we should eat together as a family but it is so difficult to find the time. Is it so important? What are the benefits of family meals? Studies have shown that children who regularly interact with their parents around the dinner table have larger vocabularies, make better grades in school and are less likely to experiment with drugs or premarital sex.

Even though it seems our kids are only interested in what their peers have to say child development experts agree that, even during the teen years, the voice kids most want to hear is that of their parents. One of the benefits of family meals are that they are a great way to foster parent/child communication.

One of the reasons eating together does so much to help us talk with our kids is that is uses what psychologist call a peripheral activity. In plain English, this means that buttering a slice of bread or putting dressing on your salad, relieves some of the pressure of talking, making it easier to open up in conversations.

Okay so you can’t manage dinner together as a family seven or even five nights a week but maybe you could do three. Here is more incentive … a study found that one common theme in the lives of National Honor Society Scholars in this country is that most of them grew up in homes where families ate dinner together three or more nights a week.

Here are some tips on helping to make it happen so you can enjoy the benefits of family meals:

Keep it simple – If the most you can manage is sharing take-out or gathering in a booth at a restaurant or fast food place that is okay – the important thing is the time together.

Delay the dinner hour if you need - if you work late, provide healthy snacks to tide the rest of the family over until they get home.

Grill meat, chicken or fish not your kids – Keep family meals stress-free, relaxed and fun. Don’t nag about school grades or chores.

No electronics - no cell phones or hand held video devices at the table. Shut off the TV and don’t answer phones.

Teamwork - Take turns with chores like setting and clearing the table and washing the dishes so the burden doesn’t fall on one person.

Ask open-ended questions - Share your day with your kids then ask open-ended questions to get them talking about theirs.

Practice active listening - know when to talk and when to zip it and let your kids lead the conversation.

Family time anytime - it doesn’t have to be the evening meal you share. Plan a Saturday brunch or Sunday lunch together.

Immunization Information

There was a good article in Parade Magazine regarding immunizations for children. The article warned that children between the teen and “tween” years tend to fall off the radar of the health care system since they usually only visit a doctor when they are sick. Plus with so many people losing their health insurance these days kids are even less likely to see their family doctor.

According to the Center for Disease Control the shots adolescents are most likely to miss out on are:

Tdap – for tetanus and diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) – Recommended for 11 and 12 year olds

MCV4 – the meningitis vaccine – Recommended for 11 and 12 year olds

HPV - to prevent cervical cancer

Even if your teenager received all recommended vaccinations as a child, those shots may not be enough to keep them healthy. Some children need to have “catch-up” vaccines they may not have had as kids. Among these are Varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, and MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)

Certain high-risk groups, such as children with diabetes or asthma, may also need a pneumonia vaccine. The CDC recommends that all kids from ages 6 months to 19 years receive an annual flu vaccine.

Doctors recommend checking your child’s immunization record against the CDC list. Go to cdc.gov to find their list of recommended vaccines.

If you are currently without health insurance and feel you can not afford these vaccines check out your local county (government) health center. They give immunizations on a income based fee. When our health insurance was not good or non existent, I went to the county clinic and had my children immunized for only a few dollars per shot.

For information on vaccines for women see our postVaccine for Women Only – Gardasil Vaccine

Halloween Safety Tips For Children

Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible have an adult go with you.

Walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.

Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks and low-flying brooms.

Cross the street only at corners, not in the middle of the block and stay together in a group before crossing.

Never hide or cross the street between parked cars.

Wear light-colored or reflective clothing so you are more visible. (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards and brooms, too!)

Use face paint rather than masks or big floppy hats that will cover your eyes.

Don’t wear long, baggy, or loose costumes or extra-large-shoes-you could trip and fall!!!

Carry a flashlight to light your way.

Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flammable.) If a costume catches fire, remember to STOP, DROP and ROLL.

Only visit well-lit homes that have a front-porch light on.

Accept treats at the door; never go into a stranger’s house or apartment.

Be cautious of animals and strangers.

Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating them.

Don’t eat candy if the package has already been opened.

Here are The American Red Cross Safety Tips for Parents

Halloween Safety Tips for Parents

Establish a route in a well-known neighborhood and discuss it with your kids.

Review Halloween safety precautions with children, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules.

Accompany children under age 12 – either you, another responsible adult or an older youth.

Remember that masks that can restrict peripheral vision and hearing and oversized or loose costumes and shoes can cause children to trip and fall.

Choose a firm return time.

Make sure children know their phone number and carry coins for emergency telephone calls or carry a cell phone.

Purchase fire retardent/fireproof costumes. Check the tag/label on the costume to make sure it’s flame resistant.

Make sure your older children are carrying ID.

Have children use flexible costume knives and swords, not ones that are rigid or sharp.

Ask children to bring treats home before eating them so you can inspect them. Remember: small, hard pieces of candy are a choling hazard for young children.

Call your local poison control center if you believe your child has eaten something tainted.

Flush eyes with cool water should face paint, glitter or shaving cream get into eyes.

Prepare for trick-or-treaters by clearing porches, lawns and sidewalks and placing jack-o-lanterns away ffrom doorways or landings.

When carving pumpkins: use stable, flat surfaces with good lighting; draw and follow patterns on the outside of the pumpkin instead of freehand carving; and use blunt instruments with dull serration specially designed for pumpkin carving.

Student Summer Jobs – Calling All TeensÂ

Parents of teens – listen up. College kids will be coming home next week so if your teen wants a job have them start looking now. Here are some tips that were published in the business section of our local paper:

Ask friends, teachers, family, neighbors, people at your church, any one you know. Also go out and look for help wanted signs. Many stores post them in their windows.

Talk to the high school guidance counselor. Employers and alumni often contact them when they have teen-appropriate job openings.

Visit an employment counselor. Make a few phone calls and see if any handle teen employment.

Be creative. Don’t just look at fast-food restaurants, restaurants and theme parks. Small businesses may need help with filing, data entry and answering phones. If your teen is good in a particular subject perhaps they can tutor younger children during the summer privately or at one of the tutoring centers in town. Kumon Math And Reading employees teens as tutors in our area. Lifeguard jobs are usually plentiful for those with certification. Lawns need to mowed more frequently and parents need babysitters more often.Â

Surf the web. Sites recommended by our paper are: SnagAjob.com, RileyGuide.com/teen.html. Also mentioned are monster.com, craigslist.org/ and careerbuilder.com

Dress nicely when you go to interview. Khaki pants and button down shirt for guys and for girls nice pants or skirt suit. No dangling jewelry and no earrings for guys.

Be prepared. Bring a resume whenever you apply for a job. If  you don’t have much work experience talk about your volunteer work, church activities, school activities, honor societies and outside of school activities. Think about all your experiences – hobbies, sports and interests count as well as baby sitting experience. Some employers hiring teen camp counselors require only an interest in children.

Be agressive and persistent. It will work in your favor in this situation. Send a thank you note – it is always a nice touch and people really appreciate it.

Have a good attitude and be enthusiastic.

Sometimes teens need volunteer hours for honor societies or other organizations they belong to. See our post on Part-time-jobs-for-teens-volunteer

Summer is coming and all of us working moms are wondering what to do with teens who are not old enough to work but are too old for summer camp. The last thing we want to see is them sitting home all summer plopped in front of the  computer. The last thing we want to hear is “Mom, I boooored.” So what can we do? A newspaper article in our local paper suggested part time volunteer work. This is really a great idea and I can speak from personal experience. My son has volunteered at the public library for the past two years and has loved it. My daughter was 12 when she started volunteering. She volunteered to read to the kids once a week at one of our local Head Start centers. She also really enjoyed her volunteer work and said it helped her not be so bored. There are volunteer opportunities for teens at hospitals, local humane societies and pet rescue organizations. The article in my paper suggested parents approach their local vet and ask about an internship. Find out what your child is interested in and see if there is a related volunteer opportunity.

The article in my paper also said that according to Sarah Gish, publisher of The Summer Book: A Guide to Houston’s Day Camps and Classes for Kids and Teens, many camps have extended their programs to teens because of interest from the parents. Younger teens may attend camp or become a junior camp counselor. I know the Girl Scouts offer the junior counselor or camp aide option to the older Girl Scouts in their day camp program. I hope this post will get you thinking because some of these volunteer opportunities fill up fast.

Update: September 2011

I recently came across some “on site” volunteering information:

Powerfuldifference.com – For a dose of girl power, download the Make a Powerful Difference Action Kit to help your daughter decide which mission to support and how she can get involved.

Everywun.com – Your kid can take quizzes and read newsletters to earn a badge on his Facebook page. Companies such as the North Face make a direct donation to a cause every time a badge is posted.

Bobbboomcards.com – Pay it forward with simple acts of kindness-like holding the door open or giving a small gift – with a deck of 26 Boob Boom! Cards ($10). Pass on each card once you’re done.

Visit us fasthowto.com and teach your teen how to make their own pizza Quick-and-Easy-Homemade-Pizza
