This meditation about feng shui is one of my favorite ones from the book Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach. She quotes Katherine Metz, a contemporary feng shui practitioner who says “all of us can make simple and affordable changes in our homes and workplaces that will spark our natural potential to be as alive, receptive and as focused as possible. In these rapidly changing times, simple feng shui adjustments can help bring clarity, peace, joy and prosperity.”

Here are some of Metz’s suggestions:

Hang a brass wind chime inside your fromt door for clarity

Have books in plain view as you enter your home to increase insight

Hang a round mirror (it can be small one ) in your bedroom to bring more love, compassion, and understanding to an intimate relationship

Place flowers in your bedroom, kitchen and study to culitvate good luck

Hang a mirror on the wall adjacent to or behind your stove to reflect the burners, which are symbols of wealth and prosperity.

Metz also advises that if you are stuck in a rut or a bad situation “move 27 objects in your home that have not been moved in the last year” which will “enhance your ability to move forward in life.”

Want to know the latest on state of American Married Life. Read on for some statistics quoted in Parade Magazine.

LOVE

56% would definitely marry the same person again

44% of women have thought about leaving their husbands

31% of men have thought about leaving their wives

SEX

31% have sex less than once a month

48% of men don’t have sex more often because their spouse isn’t interested

33% of women don’t have sex more often because they’re tired

SECRETS

24% have kept an important secret from their spouse

63% would try to save their marriage if their spouse was unfaithful

19% of men have had sex outside of marriage

WHY DO YOU STAY MARRIED

71% deep love

73% companionship

According to Dr. Joy Browne as quoted in Parade Magazine here a five steps to a happy marriage:

5 STEPS TO A HAPPY MARRIAGE

Communicate your goals – Instead of complaining when you are upset, try to sort out what you really need in your marriage. Take time to write it down. Spell out you short and long term goals. Share them with your spouse and be prepared to listen to what he or she wants for the two of you.

Learn to like your mate - Loving is a gift. Like is practical. Tell your spouse something that you like about him or her every day. Be specific.

Pull out a happy face – Keep a picture of the two of you at your happiest and look at it whenever your annoyed with one another.

Make peace not war – Every couple disagrees sometimes. But screaming at each other does not solve the problem. Compromise, compromise, compromise. But don’t try to solve problems when you are angry with each other. Cool down and remember why you married this person. Choosing the same day of the week to sit down and talk can take the tension out of disagreements and cut down on daily sniping. Be thoughtful. Think how you would feel if you heard what you are planning to say to your spouse.

Go on dates - No discussing kids or financial matters. Take turns planning. Try to think what the other person would enjoy.

In the past ice cream, cookies, and other sweets were considered off-limits to people with diabetes. In her book, The Everyday Gourmet Diabetes Cookbook, Mary Donkersloot, R.D. explains research has shown consistently shown that common table sugar and other sugars when consumed separately or as part of a meal or snack do not have a greater impact on blood glucose levels than other carbohydrates. Because physicians have a better understanding on the effects of different foods on blood glucose, sweet foods have become an acceptable part of the diabetes meal plan. She recommends diabetics eat sweets in small portions and learn what they do to their blood glucose.

Prevention Magazine Natural Diabetic Care Cookbook

If you are entertaining someone who is diabetic, be aware that they always have to plan what they eat. Don’t be offended if they ask about ingredients, it could make a big difference to them. Also, there are many foods that are labeled “no sugar-added” which still contain sugar-like products such as high-fructose corn syrup, fructose, corn syrup, honey, lactose, maltose, mannitol, sorbitol,, xlylitol, or molasses. All of these products do contain sugar so be aware before you offer them to a diabetic.

Here is a great diabetic dessert recipe that is great for non-diabetics too from The Everyday Gourmet Diabetes Cookbook by Mary Donkersloot:

Viennese Brownies – Makes 16 Brownies

Mary says by substituting egg whites for whole eggs she was able to cut the fat to one-third the amount of a regular brownie.

Vegetable oil cooking spray
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate (2 squares)
2 tablespoons canola oil
3/4 cup water (only if using powdered egg white)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
¼ powdered egg white or 3 egg whites
1 cup sugar
½ cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
¼ teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons sifted confectioners’ sugar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and coat an 8 inch square baking pan with vegetable oil cooking spray.Place chocolate squares in a small glass bowl with the oil and melt in the microwave (or double boiler on the stovetop). Remove from heat and add the water and vanilla. If using powdered egg white; in a separate bowl, combine powdered egg white and sugar.
And salt. Blend thoroughly. Fold in the melted chocolate mixture, stirring until just moist. If using fresh egg white, add them to the mixture and blend well.Pour batter into a prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden pick comes out clean. Let stand to cool and sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar.Per brownie

Summer is coming and all of us working moms are wondering what to do with teens who are not old enough to work but are too old for summer camp. The last thing we want to see is them sitting home all summer plopped in front of the  computer. The last thing we want to hear is “Mom, I boooored.” So what can we do? A newspaper article in our local paper suggested part time volunteer work. This is really a great idea and I can speak from personal experience. My son has volunteered at the public library for the past two years and has loved it. My daughter was 12 when she started volunteering. She volunteered to read to the kids once a week at one of our local Head Start centers. She also really enjoyed her volunteer work and said it helped her not be so bored. There are volunteer opportunities for teens at hospitals, local humane societies and pet rescue organizations. The article in my paper suggested parents approach their local vet and ask about an internship. Find out what your child is interested in and see if there is a related volunteer opportunity.

The article in my paper also said that according to Sarah Gish, publisher of The Summer Book: A Guide to Houston’s Day Camps and Classes for Kids and Teens, many camps have extended their programs to teens because of interest from the parents. Younger teens may attend camp or become a junior camp counselor. I know the Girl Scouts offer the junior counselor or camp aide option to the older Girl Scouts in their day camp program. I hope this post will get you thinking because some of these volunteer opportunities fill up fast.

Credit is a woman’s issue too! Maybe it’s even more of a women’s issue than a man’s issue. I know lots of women had credit and loans in their husband’s names. If they endured a divorce or death of a spouse, they suddenly found that they did not have an adequate credit history. Many displaced homemakers feel this pinch very strongly, and I personally know of a woman who had access to credit, but had to rely on it a lot the first year after her divorce until child support arrangements got settled. Even though she had income, that old temptation to keep the lights on by using a credit card was a pretty strong urge!

Look, I worked in a financial professon, and most of the people I knew who had credit issues ran into a rough spot like that. They were working very hard to get everything normalized, but one rough spot put them deeply in debt. With finance charges, and late payment penalties stacking up, it became very difficult to work their way out!

I just finished working on the BadCreditBlues Credit Repair Guide. I worked on it with the help of an associate that used to work in the collections department of a bank, AND had experience as a major lender loan officer. When I applied for a mortgage, she certainly helped me take steps to get the very best interest rate possible, and so her ideas are great.

Well, Boar or Dog?

Chinese New Year approaches, and I am perplexed by the same question that always hits me this time of year. If I were Chinese, would I be a boar or a dog. See I already celebrated my birthday this year. But according the placemat in every Chinese Buffet, my birth year would make me a Boar. However, a very nice Chinese lady that I worked with, told me that since my birthday came before the Chinese New Year, that I was really a Dog.

This makes sense to me. The Chinese New Year doesn’t fall on the same date as ours. So, since my birthday pops up before the celebration, or sometimes almost at the same time, I might be a dog. But maybe the Chinese New Year floats around a bit on our calendar, and in my own birth year, I could have been born after it. Who knows? Maybe I was even a Chinese New Year Baby?

My kids do not care.

I explained the situation to my teen-aged son. He is very good at math and has always had a gift for hair splitting. He looked at me with his best vacant scare. I honestly don’t think he cares! Oh well, I can see big trouble is brewing IN THE WORLD (of warcraft), and he must attend to it. My conversations about foreign horoscopes pale…..

Well, next I hopped over to Yahoo Horoscope. The good Yahoos were aware that I was born under the sign of Aquarius, but that’s not what my problem was. I clicked the link for Chinese Astrology. You can click here to find out what your Chinese Astrology Sign is. ….or can you?

Yahoo! thinks I’m a pig. I wonder what Wiki thinks..or never mind. They let Steven Colbert get away with that elephant thing! I still think it is illogical since I already had my birthday.

Oh, YAHOO – anybody got a resource to tell me what day the Chinese New Year Fell on a day that was lo, those many decades ago?

EUREKA – I FOUND IT!

O.K. apparently the Chinese New Year always begins on the full moon and since our calendar doesn’t work that way, the Chinese New Year Date floats on our holiday. Apparently Chinese New Year can be from late January to early February on Our Calendar. Anyway, if you HOP OVER TO WIKIPEDIA CHINESE NEW YEAR, ALL SECRETS WILL BE REVEALED (that is, if they are correct!).

Anyway the point of this is….in my birth year, I was born slightly after the Chinese New Year, even though my birthday fell a little before it this year. I am, indeed, a pig.

I don’t give enough to charity

Well, I don’t think I give enough, so first I decided to make a page telling visitors which merchants they could buy products from who donated a portion of their earnings to charity. The trouble is, I didn’t find that many online merchants who had an offer, though there are plenty of charities or non-profit organizations that run online stores. Anyway, you can click here to visit my Online Charity Merchant Page.

I run several websites and blogs, and I do it pretty much to benefit…me. But I’m comfortable. The online world has been good to me. Since I can assign tracking codes so I know which websites purchases come from, I decided to contribute 25% of my pay to charity when a sale or transaction originates on WomanWork.Net. I may change the amount – and I will post and tell you – depending upon how it goes.

See, workingwoman.net is sort of a self-indulgent blog for me. It is not related to my main area of expertise. As such, it is the one operation I don’t really run like a business, and so it isn’t even paying for it’s own hosting …. yet. When it gets to the point where it pays for itself, then I will probably decide to have it direct a larger percentage to charity.

See that article that Time Magazine published about YOU (and ME) being the person of the year really struck a nerve! But that was the subject of another post! Go look for it.

If you have suggestions for worthwhile online merchants who donate to charity, please comment, and I’ll check them out. If I think they are ‘real’, I’ll add them to the page.
